Question 1
NACTO use visuals to demonstrate the change in thinking about how streets should be designed. (see slides 5 and 6 in Lecture 7).  Based on these visuals, write a description of the change in the philosophy of street design that has occurred over the last several years.  
List four specific changes to the physical design or operations of the street that would be needed to implement this new philosophy. 
 
Question 2
Use the list of the features of a good urban street network from the notes to rate the Storrs Center street network that is also shown in the notes.  Give a rating for each of the seven items and an overall rating for the network as a whole.  Use a scale of 1 to 10 for your rating and give a brief explanation for your overall rating. 

 

Question 3
 

In the reading on Biking in Amsterdam, what do you consider to be the most challenging of the 5 steps to implement in the US context.  Please discuss.

Question 4
 

Jarrett Walker lists seven key characteristics of an effective transit system. Three of these characteristics are a) It is a good use of my time, b) It is a good use of my money, b) It respects me.

 

For each of these characteristics list the type of information that you would need to collect to assess whether or not transit in a given cities are best meeting the goals for these characteristics.

 

Question 5

Jarrett Walker lists freedom as one of the seven key characteristics of an effective transit system.  In my mind, no mode of transportation offers complete freedom - travel always comes at a cost.  In some measures of freedom, transit is superior, while in others, cars perform better. Make as comprehensive a list as possible of those aspects of freedom for which transit performs better and a similar list for cars.
