Question 1

Estimate the design hour volume in the design direction for Storrs Road (SR 195) given that the

AADT = 10,000, and the directional split is 0.60:0.40.

Use the 60th hour as the design hour and estimate the relationship between AADT and design hour using the AASHTO chart (see note below).

Assume that the line for the average conditions applies to Storrs Road.

(Use the form from Lecture 5.1, slide 29)

Question 2

Based on the DHV calculated in Question 1.

Determine the number of lanes that will be needed in each direction to carry this traffic at a LOS E.

The maximum volume for each level of service on this type of road is given below.

LOS C 290, LOS D 780, LOS E 880, LOS F >880

Question 3

On a design project we predicted a directional split of 0.75:0.25. After construction we found out that the directional split was closer to 0.50:0.50. What would be the potential implication of this error in terms of travel conditions on the road?

Will the road be more congested than anticipated (assume all other factors remain the same as predicted) ? Please explain you answer.

In the case of the stretch of Storrs Road that is just south of UConn, state whether or not you think the building of the new Storrs Center is likely to have changed the directional distribution of traffic. Please explain.

Question 4

The traffic volume on two different roads vary as follows:

1. The traffic flow is relatively constant over the course of the year and the daily traffic peak is relatively small

2. The traffic flow varies significantly from one season of the year to the next and the daily traffic peak during the busiest part of the year is quite large.

Which of the curves in the figure in Q 1 most closely approximate to condition 1 and 2, respectively. Please explain.

What is the potential impact on the size of road of using the 30th hour volume versus using the 100th hour volume?
